Big Fish, Musical Theatre West

Long Beach Press Telegram

“Big Fish..." is that rare creature: a Broadway musical that depends on its heart, and builds from there to spectacular musical numbers that tell its story... featuring Peggy Hickey’s delightful choreography and the musical direction of Matthew Smedal, whose pit orchestra was worth the price of admission by itself.

Critic’s Pick...The lively score, consisting of vibrant orchestral marches, lilting romantic ballads ("Till Then"), hilarious vaudevillian ditties ("The Lees of Old Virginia"), and galvanizing group numbers ("Cool, Cool, Considerate Men") is captivating throughout. The glorious songs are in shipshape form here, thanks to music director Matthew Smedal, his terrific orchestra, and the cast's vocal prowess.

Director Robert Johanson and his entire creative team get the mix of reverence, hypocrisy, illumination and anguish just right in this very moving – and at times disturbing – production. 1776, Musical Theatre West

Theatre Mania

With the rich quality of voices assembled, one wishes Sherman Edwards' score contained more songs... Audiences will revel in Gaines' spirited romp through "The Lees of Old Virginia," Bernard's saucy "He Plays the Violin," Kean's heartbreaking "Momma Look Sharp,' and Townsend's tour-de-force rendition of "Molasses to Rum." Indeed, the entire score soars under the musical direction of Matthew Smedal.

Man Of La Mancha, Musical Theatre West

Backstage West

Critic’s Pick... This literate musical, imaginatively adapted by book writer Dale Wasserman, composer Mitch Leigh, and lyricist Joe Darion from Miguel de Cervantes' enduringly relevant 17th-century novel "Don Quixote," remains one of the most durable Broadway hits from the 1960s... Matthew Smedal's musical direction beautifully serves the score, and Carlos Mendoza's choreography is graceful and thrilling. Musical Theatre West's enormously satisfying revival proves that in musical theater, dreams needn't be impossible.

I Do! I Do!, Laguna Beach Playhouse

Stage And Cinema

With all the adorability, simplicity, cliché and generic tone of a Hallmark Card, I Do! I Do! opened last weekend at the Laguna Playhouse. Starring Broadway stalwarts Davis Gaines and Vicki Lewis, the 1966 two-character musical by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt (The Fantasticks) has aged surprisingly well… Music Director Helen Gregory and Matthew Smedal do exemplary work on the keyboards.
